Based on the Red Dragon novel by Thomas Harris, Hannibal revolves around the early relationship between FBI investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a forensic psychiatrist who becomes an infamous cannibalistic serial killer. Others in the cast of this thriller series include Laurence J. Fishburne III, Aaron Abrams, Caroline Dhavernas, Scott Thompson, Tao Okamoto, and Gillian Anderson.
According to Deadline, the contracts for Dancy and Mikkelsen have now expired which means that they are free and clear to accept other projects. If Gaumont is successful in finding a new home for Hannibal, new contracts will have to be worked out with the actors — if they’re still available. Word is that they both still love the show and would like to return if they can.
Fishburne has already been cast as author Alex Haley in the remake of Roots for A&E.
While he’s hopeful that Hannibal can continue, executive producer Bryan Fuller is already committed to another series called American Gods for Starz. If a new distributor could be found, they would presumably have to wait for him to become available.
While some have hoped that Netflix might save the show, it seems that’s not an option. There’s already a streaming deal in place with Amazon and it’s understood that that deal precludes deals with other streaming services.
If Hannibal has indeed been cancelled for good, Fuller says that the third season finale could serve as both a season and series finale.
