What’s This TV Show About?

Airing on the CBS television network, Hawaii Five-0 is a reboot of the original CBS TV show, which ran from 1968 to 1980. The police procedural follows a federalized task force meant to wipe out crime in Hawaii. Detective Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) returned to Oahu to investigate his father’s murder but remained to lead the new group with blanket authority and no red tape. The force includes ex-New Jersey cop Detective Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan). A former protégé of McGarrett’s father, Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) is also on board, as is his beautiful cousin, Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park). Quirky coroner Dr. Max Bergman (Masi Oka), Captain Lou Grover (Chi McBride), and conspiracy theorist Jerry Ortega (Jorge Garcia) round out the team. While they spar and joke among themselves, the teammates are determined to eliminate all seedy elements from the 50th state.

Season Seven Ratings

Telly’s Take

While TV shows typically decline as they age, so far Hawaii Five-0 season seven has recovered all the ground it lost last year. It is nearly back to its season five levels. Provided Hawaii Five-0 keeps up its solid performance, it should be renewed for season eight. Star Alex O’Loughlin has indicated the show’s action sequences have taken their toll however. Should CBS renew Hawaii Five-0 for season eight, the actor plans to make it his final season. Overall, I think an eighth season is a relatively safe bet, but wouldn’t expect the show to continue much longer, after that.

3/23 update: Hawaii Five-0 has been renewed for season eight on CBS. Details here.
