Heartbeat is a new series headed to NBC this mid-season, and viewers now have their first look at the series. NBC released the first trailer for the series starring Melissa George on Wednesday.

George will play a female heart surgeon, and the series is based on the real life experiences of Dr. Kathy Magliato from her book Heart Matters: A Memoir Of A Female Heart Surgeon.

Amy Brenneman is one of the executive producers of the series, and she spoke about bringing Heartbeat to NBC during NBC’s Winter TCA panel.

She said:

“I wasn’t looking to produce, but I know what makes a good role. That woman is a TV show. My mother became a female judge in Connecticut because of a man — a gatekeeper who let her in. So with Dr. Kathy we wondered who let her into her position. What is that relationship? How this woman came to be was our North Star.”

The first episode was also teased by Deadline. During the pilot, viewers will see George’s character deal with an emergency on an airplane when she is on vacation. Brenneman said that, “Your life is being on call. You’re so specialized that you’re kicked to the front of the plane.”

Those involved with the series said there is some creative license taken with the series. George joked that she had more lovers on the show than Magliato had in real life, but the series will take on medical cases that are not normally seen on television.

Does this sound like NBC’s take on Grey’s Anatomy? George starred on that series briefly, so she saw Sandra Oh’s Cristina Yang in action.
