Hot in Cleveland: How the TV Land Series Ended

Hot in Cleveland TV show on TV Land: last episodeLast night marked the end of the Hot in Cleveland TV show. After six seasons and 128 episodes, the ladies said goodbye to their TV Land series. Here’s what happened on the two-part finale — “Vegas Baby” and “I Hate Goodbyes”.

The pair of episodes begin with an homage to the pilot episode. Melanie is on a plane to Paris, sitting next to a handsome stranger named Tom (guest Thomas Gibson). They start talking and she recounts the adventure of the last few days.

At Joy’s bachelorette party, Victoria announces that she’s moving back to Los Angeles and Joy selects Melanie to give the toast at her upcoming wedding in Paris to Bob. At his bachelor party, Bob accidentally gets Melanie’s face tattooed on his chest, instead of Joy’s.

As they’re about to leave for Paris, Joy gets a call that her adoption papers went through and she can pick up her new baby in Las Vegas. Soon, the four ladies plus Bob (Dave Foley), his recently divorced father Bob Sr (guest Bob Newhart), and Mamie Sue (who loves to gamble) head to Vegas.

Once the plane landed, a gate wasn’t immediately available so Joy opened the emergency exit door and she and Bob went to retrieve their new baby. Melanie ended up taking the rap for opening the door and ends up in jail.

She soon has some company in the clink. Mamie Sue’s gambling problem got out of hand. Bob Sr accidentally sexually assaults a card dealer at a casino and Elka then punched the dealer. Melanie continues to work on her wedding speech, much to the dismay of all.

Meanwhile, Victoria has met with a producer named Bart (guest Tyler Ritter) in a hotel about making her big comeback. Unfortunately, his plan all hinges on her being in a show that promotes Japanese adult diapers for women. While standing alone on her room balcony, she discovers that her old flame Johnny Revere (guest Huey Lewis) is in the room next to hers. He has an ongoing Vegas show and is sleeping with lots of young women. They chat and decide that they’re not happy focusing on their careers.

Victoria recalls when she was much younger and climbed onto his balcony. She tries it again and they both fall — thankfully, into a big fountain below. On their way back to their rooms, Victoria learns that Johnny has also promoted an embarrassing Japanese product — Happy Penis Pow Pow. They are truly right for each other.

Elka finds a way to get she and Bob Sr out of jail (thanks to agreeing to testify against Melanie). She offered to help him find a woman but he’d rather spend time with her.

Joy and Bob hit lots of roadblocks as they try to reach the adoption agency. She is not pleased about his new tattoo and he agrees to get rid of it. After their cab driver bails on them, Bob takes over the driving and ends up having to deliver a pregnant woman’s baby. They finally reach the agency and discover they can’t get the baby until they’re truly married. They head to a chapel.

Melanie and Mamie get out of jail because the guard is sick of hearing about the wedding speech. Mamie’s about to use the slot machines in the prison when Melanie receives an emergency text to come to the chapel and the two hurry off.

The chapel is filled when Joy and Bob arrive but decide to break in on the next ceremony — and find Elka and Bob Sr are the couple. Victoria, Johnny, Melanie and Mamie Sure are already in attendance. The groom says, “I realized what I was looking for was right in front of me.”

Joy and Bob join in for a double wedding — which is officiated by a Johnny Revere impersonator. It’s only afterward that Joy realizes that Elka is now her mother-in-law. They all hurry off to pick up the new daughter/grand-daughter. It’s love at first sight.

Everyone heads back to the airport for their trip to Paris. The four women spend time together and Joy reveals that she’s naming the baby Elizabeth or Betty for short because ladies named Betty are always so pretty. They reminisce and Melanie talks about how much the last six years have meant to her and how they’ve all grown and supported and loved one another. It’s the perfect speech for the occasion.

Melanie returns to her seat and it brings us back to the start of the episode, as she finishes recounting the story to the handsome stranger. Everyone has a happy ending but her and he asks how her story will end. She’s not sure but believes something big will happen.

As in the pilot, the plane is rocked by a big storm. She can’t believe this is happening again and holds his hand tightly. Fade to five years later and they’re still together at the bar back in Cleveland — now wearing wedding rings. It’s a birthday party and all of the couples and Mamie Sue are celebrating young Betty’s fifth birthday.

An on-screen message tells us that the ladies still got together every Wednesday night (the evening that the TV show aired). We see the four sitting on the porch swing holding glasses of champagne, toasting and looking forward to next week’s meeting.

What do you think? Did you like the last episode of Hot in Cleveland? Would you have watched a seventh season?
