I Survived a Japanese Game Show

In this series, 10 home-body Americans are selected to compete on a TV game show. What they don’t know is that the game show they’re competing in is actually in Japan. Participants are flown to Tokyo to compete on the wacky Japanese show Majide (or “seriously?!” in English) hosted by Rome Kanda.

Once there, contestants are split into two teams and face off in challenges in order to win a reward. Zany challenges include contestants eating food off of their teammate’s head while running on a treadmill, and transporting large, slime-filled eggs using only using their rear end. Rewards for the winners are a helicopter tour of Tokyo, spa treatments, or private noodle making lessons. Losers must participate in a “punishment” like pulling rickshaws, working in an arcade, or shucking clams. The losing team also has to choose two contestants to compete against one another in an elimination challenge.

The show also follows the Americans as they explore an entirely foreign culture. Contestants live in a house together with “Mamasan” who keeps them in line with Japanese customs as well as telling them when to go to bed. Host Tony Somo also serves as a cultural guide for the contestants vying for a grand prize of $250,000.
