TV show description:
After separating from her husband, New York lawyer Amy Gray (Amy Brenneman) and her young daughter, Lauren Cassidy (Karle Warren), move back to Amy’s hometown in Hartford Connecticut.

They move in with her widowed and strong-willed mother, Maxine (Tyne Daly). The rest of the family includes Amy’s younger brother, gifted author Vincent (Dan Futterman); older brother Peter (Marcus Giamatti) and his controlling wife, Gillian (Jessica Tuck); and cousin Kyle McCarty (Kevin Rahm).

Maxine is a caseworker for the Department of Children and Family Services and works under Sean Potter (Timothy Omundson), who is often frustrated by her unorthodox methods.

At the young age of 34, Amy becomes a judge for the city’s family court and begins working with clerk Donna Kozlowski (Jillian Armenante) and Court Services Officer Bruce van Exel (Richard T. Jones). While balancing career with family, she makes a name for herself in family court for her stubbornness and unusual methods.

After her divorce from Michael Cassidy (John Slattery, later Richard Burgi) is finalized, Amy begins dating men like attorney Stuart Collins (Reed Diamond), young karate teacher Rob Meltzer (Tom Welling), and Assistant District Attorney David McClaren (David McClaren).
