Say farewell to The Kennedys. Series creator Emma Kennedy has announced the BBC sitcom has been cancelled after one season.
The comedy premiered in 2015.
Based on Kennedy’s childhood, The Kennedys followed the eccentric family and their friends in 1970s England. The series starred Lucy Hutchinson, Katherine Parkinson, and Dan Skinner.
Kennedy cited low ratings as the reason for the series’ cancellation.
From her blog:
So let’s get into it. BBC1 don’t want a second series of The Kennedys. Bottom line – we did pretty well for a series one comedy but not well enough as series 8 of Gogglebox and that, I’m afraid, is sort of it.
Viewing figures are the holy grail of Channels, some more than others and we were on a channel for whom viewing figures are very important.”
Kennedy closed her blog post by saying she was “extremely proud” of the series they created:
I am extremely proud of The Kennedys. I was surrounded by creative people at the top of their game and I’d like to give special thanks to my simply amazing producer, Emma Strain, who worked tirelessly and made me better than I could have dreamed of, the director Chris Gernon who made everything look utterly beautiful and my brilliant cast and crew who, without a doubt, all knocked it out the park. I was supported by two great execs, Richard Webb and Myfanwy Moore who fought like hell for us. For these things, I shall be eternally grateful. The creative side of the process was a great and wonderful adventure and none of us, in The Kennedys home team, would have done anything differently.”
What do you think? Did you watch The Kennedys? Would you have liked another season?
