The Knick: Steven Soderbergh Wants Six Seasons for Cinemax Series

the-knick

The Knick will continue. In an interview with Variety, series creator Steven Soderbergh said he’s planning for many more seasons of the Cinemax historical series.

Season two of the series ended in December.

A couple of weeks ago, we reported that Cinemax had ordered a script for the season three premiere. In that interview, Soderbergh expressed his desire to have the series radically change every two years. [Spoiler warning] Season two ended with the death of the show’s lead character, Dr. John Thackery (Clive Own).

Speaking to Variety, Soderbergh says the series might take place in a different era with different characters:

It was always conceived in two-year chunks. The writers met yesterday to talk about what year three and four would look like — when would it take place, who are the characters. We always imagined every two years we would annihilate what came before and start over. And that’s what we’re doing now.”

He also mentioned that he’d like for the series to last six seasons in total:

I would like to keep going. I always thought of it as a six-year thing if we were allowed to continue. I hope we can figure it out. I hope we come up with something that I look at it and go, OK, I want to spend another two years of my life on that. Because that’s really the question. It’s an intense experience — rewarding, but I want to make sure we want to keep the bar at the same height or higher.”

And what about Clive Owen? Will he return?

Soderbergh said “the door is open” for Owen to return as a different character perhaps.

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Knick? What do you think of Soderbergh’s creative plan?
