TV show description:
This British romantic drama was created by Sally Wainwright who was personally inspired by the real life second marriage of her mother.
The TV series follows Alan Buttershaw (Derek Jacobi) and Celia Dawson (Anne Reid), two childhood sweethearts who are now in their seventies and have been out of touch for 60 years. Persuaded to join Facebook by their grandchildren, the two reconnect online.
Alan, who has been in love with Celia since he was 16 years old, needs no prodding to reconnect. Recently widowed Celia had been in an unhappy marriage to a man she despised and is eager to see Alan again as well.
Celia’s daughter Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) is surprised by the revelation, though distracted by her own romantic problems — involving her adulterous husband (Tony Gardner) and her own affair with Kate (Nina Sosanya), a female colleague. Caroline and Alan’s daughter Gillian (Nicola Walker) clash during their first meeting.
