What’s in store for Law & Order: SVU? Recently, star Raul Esparza spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the future of the NBC TV series.
Esparza plays Rafael Barba on the long-running legal drama, which also stars Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Kelli Giddish, and Peter Scanavino. NBC has already renewed Law & Order: SVU for season 19.
In the interview, Esparza teased the series’ season 18 finale, which airs tonight, May 24th, at 9 p.m. ET/PT:
It’s different from what I’ve been used to over the last few seasons, but not wrong in relationship to this particular story because it’s not resolved. The ending of this season is about putting very painful and morally dubious issues in front of an audience and letting them reverberate. It ends a little bit like a blast from a bomb. It’s not something big that happens at the very end, it’s just this sense of that ringing in your ears.”
And what about next season? Esparza said season 19 of Law & Order: SVU will definitely tackle more real-world issues:
So unfortunately, we’re not running out of subjects and the way things have been going lately, particularly the health- care conversation, I think is deeply related to the show and I’m sure that all that will come into it because it’s part of why Law & Order exists. Dick Wolf set out not to just create these procedurals that are delicious and compact, he also set out to create a show that riffs on headlines so that’s part of the mission of the show.”
