Les Miserables: Mini-Series of Classic Novel in the Works

Les Miserables TV show

Can you hear the people sing? They’re singing about a new TV show. Deadline reports the BBC and The Weinstein Co. are developing a new series based on the novel Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.

Published in 1862, the epic novel tells the story of several characters living during a time of unrest in early 19th century France. Since its release, the book has been adapted into several movies, a popular musical, and a 2000 TV mini-series starring Gerard Depardieu.

Andrew Davies, who also adapted War and Peace for the BBC, will write the six-part mini-series.

From Davies:

Les Misérables is a huge iconic title. Most of us are familiar with the musical version which only offers a fragmentary outline of its story. I am thrilled to have the opportunity of doing real justice to Victor Hugo at last by adapting his masterpiece in a six hour version for the BBC, with the same team who made War & Peace.”

What do you think? Have you read or seen the film of Les Miserables? Will you watch the BBC mini-series?
