The Lord of the Rings: Expensive Tolkien TV Series Being Shopped

Lord of the Rings TV show: (canceled or renewed?)

Is Lord of the Rings coming to the small screen? Variety reports Warner Bros. and Amazon are in talks to develop a TV show based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novels.

The fantasy story, which follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins on his journey to destroy a powerful ring, were adapted into an Oscar-winning film trilogy in the early 2000s. The cast included Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Sean Astin, Christopher Lee, and Orlando Bloom.

Now, it seems Warner Bros. is shopping Lord of the Rings as a TV series and Prime Video CEO Jeff Bezos is said to be personally involved in the negotiations. Ever since the streaming service cancelled their two series Z: The Beginning of Everything and The Last Tycoon, Amazon has been moving more towards genre programming with international appeal—i.e. shows like Game of Thrones.

Neither Amazon nor Warner Bros. have confirmed the news.

What do you think? Are you a fan of Lord of the Rings? Do you think it would work as a TV series?
