Luther will return to BBC One next month with a two-part special, but there is a chance that fans could see more of Idris Elba and Luther in the future.
Elba spoke about the new series and its new direction with the press, and he revealed that a fifth season is possible for the series. However, season four is a “revamp” for Luther. After two years away, fans will see an older and wiser man on the series.
According to Digital Spy, Elba said the following:
“I don’t think [series creator] Neil Cross or I were satisified with the ending of the last one. It felt like there were some unanswered questions. I don’t think we ever really resolved whether it was going to be the end – I think that version of Luther had stopped and now I think this version of Luther – which is slightly older and a little bit wiser – begins a next chapter.”
Elba went on to say that the series “has grown a little bit.” As for the potential for more Luther after this return, Elba teased that they could do another six episode season, but it ” would be the end of [him].”
