TV show description:
Set in contemporary London, the Luther TV show is a British police drama. The series follows Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) John Luther (Idris Elba). First working for the Serious Crime Unit, and later the new Serious and Serial Crime Unit, Luther is intelligent, resourceful, and dedicated to the point of obsession.

Luther’s dogged devotion has cost him personally and professionally. Possessed of tunnel vision, and a sometimes violent temper, Luther will bend the law to its breaking point, if it means solving a crime.

At first Luther works under Detective Superintendent Unit (DSU) Rose Teller (Saskia Reeves), in the Serious Crimes Unit. She fights to have him reinstated, after he suffers a breakdown. What will it cost her, when a detective takes a wrong turn?

A research scientist and sociopathic genius, Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), killed her parents and their pet, but Luther is unable to make the case. Obsessed with Luther, Alice sometimes serves as the thorn in his side, while other times, she is his saving grace. Both cross lines, to help the other out.

Human rights attorney, Zoe Luther (Indira Varma), married John while they were at university. Zoe watches as her husband’s brutal profession affects him to his core. Eventually his darkness drives her away.

Zoe falls in love with fellow human rights lawyer, Mark North (Paul McGann), who is day to Luther’s night. Alice harasses him, in an attempt to drive Zoe back home. North and Luther are at odds, until they are drawn together by tragedy.

DCI Ian Reed (Steven Mackintosh) begins the series as Luther’s most trusted friend. Once he breaks his own strict personal code, there is no turning back.

Detective Sergeant (DS) Justin Ripley (Warren Brown) is thrilled to serve as Luther’s partner, until he realizes what that involves. Working with Luther takes a professional toll on Ripley, but he remains loyal. What price will he ultimately pay?

The ambitious DS and later DCI Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird) is bright, but sheltered and naïve. Unwilling to take the risks Ripley takes, she steers clear of Luther. Will keeping her distance keep her safe?

DSU Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley) is sharp and observant. He is also hell-bent on ridding the force of corruption, even if it means the downfall of Luther, whose skills Schenk holds in high esteem.

Benny Silver (Michael Smiley) is nicknamed Deadhead, for his relaxed ways. After giving Luther some technological help, Silver is hired by the Serious and Serial Crime Unit.

A new recruit to the Serious and Serial Crimes Unit, DS Emma Lane (Rose Leslie), starts working with Luther. Despite her polished demeanor, Emma is a scrappy, determined cop.

True blue DCI Theo Bloom (Darren Boyd) is the heart and soul of the Serious and Serial Crimes Unit. He mentors Emma, as she learns the ropes. Still, in the clutch, this by-the-book detective knows to reach out to Luther.
