Sayonara and auf wiedersehen. Frank Spotnitz has exited the role of showrunner on Amazon‘s The Man in the High Castle TV show. He left production of the second season of the Philip K. Dick inspired series, over production disputes within the last few days, according to a Deadline report. Since Spotnitz created the TV series adaption, it is fair to ask how long it will continue, before being cancelled, especially without the man behind the dystopian drama.

Per Deadline, a new showrunner will not be brought on. Instead, the rest of the production team will step up to assume Spotnitz’s responsibilities. The Man in the High Castle cast includes: Alexa Davalos, Luke Kleintank, Rufus Sewell, Rupert Evans, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Joel de la Fuente.

An alternate history of the aftermath of World War II, set in 1962, The Man in the High Castle poses the question: what if the Axis powers had won World War II?

The former US has been partitioned into three sections. West of the Rockies lies the Japanese controlled Pacific States of America. The eastern  Greater Nazi Reich is under German control. The Rocky Mountain States serve as a buffer zone between the German and Japanese territories, since those nations are currently in the throes of a cold war.

Deadline updated the story with Amazon’s response:

Given the ambition and scope of the series, the decision has been made to locate all creative efforts on The Man in the High Castle to the west coast; Frank Spotnitz will remain as an Executive Producer and step back from showrunner. His responsibilities will be managed by our deep and talented bench of producers. We are enormously grateful to him for bringing our customers on one of the most watched original shows on Amazon Video and we are excited about the team’s vision for season two.)

What do you think? Did you enjoy the first season of The Man in the High Castle TV series? Do you think the second season will work as well without Spotnitz? Does this sound like the beginning of the end?
