Marco Polo: Dropped by Starz, Picked Up by Netflix

Marco Polo TV seriesIn January 2012, Starz announced Marco Polo, a new TV series about the legendary 13th century adventurer from the Weinstein Company and Electus. The program has been in slow development since then and now Starz has cancelled their plans for the project.

This gave the producers the chance to shop Marco Polo elsewhere and now Netflix has aquired the rights.

John Fusco is the program’s executive producer/writer and Sons of Anarchy’s Dave Erickson is executive producer and showrunner. Initially, Marco Polo was going to be shot in China but will now be shot elsewhere.

When Starz had the project there were going to be nine “chapters.” There’s no word yet on when Marco Polo will be finished or when Netflix will release it.

Marco Polo is described as the true story of “the world’s greatest storyteller, an epic and cinematic adventure of high politics, masterful manipulation and deadly warfare.” The series will follow the explorer’s journey during his early years in the court of Kublai Khan and the brutal war between two 13th century China empires.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to finally seeing the Marco Polo series?
