Being Mary Jane: Season Four Lawsuit Filed by Gabrielle Union

Being Mary Jane TV show on BET: season 4 renewal

There’s some drama behind the scenes of Being Mary Jane. According to The Hollywood Reporter, star Gabrielle Union has filed a lawsuit against the show’s network, BET.

Just this week, it was announced that Michael Ealy was joining season four of the drama, which follows the life and career of an Atlanta-based TV news anchor. The cast also includes Lisa Vidal, Margaret Avery, and Richard Brooks.

According to the lawsuit, Union claims the network “is trying to tape two 10-episode seasons back-to-back to ‘cram all of the episodes into a single season in order to fraudulently extend the term of Ms. Union’s contract.'”

Filming two seasons as one could result in less money for Union since her contract stipulates a salary increase for season five. The lawsuit seeks $1 million in damages and a contractural amendment requiring a maximum of 13 episodes per season.

From BET:

While we hold Gabrielle Union in the highest esteem, we feel strongly that we are contractually well within our rights and are committed to reaching a swift and positive resolution in this matter.”

What do you think? Do you watch Being Mary Jane? Do you agree with Union’s lawsuit?
