Mary Kills People: Lifetime Series Creator and Star Want Season Two and More

Mary Kills People TV show on Lifetime: season 2 (canceled or renewed?)

(Christos Kalohoridis)

The Mary Kills People TV show debuts on Lifetime on April 23, 2017 at 10:00pm. The six-episode black comedy medical drama is a Canadian TV series that first aired on Global TV back January and February of this year. While Mary Kills People has not been cancelled or renewed for season two on Global, creator Tara Armstrong and star Caroline Dhavernas — a veteran of cancelled TV series Hannibal and Wonderfalls — are hoping for a renewal.

A scripted series about euthanasia, Mary Kills People also stars Jay Ryan, Richard Short, Lyriq Bent, Greg Bryk, Abigail Winter, Grace Lynn Kung, Katie Douglas, Alexandra Castillo, Sebastien Roberts, Lola Flanery, Natalie Lisinska, and Jess Salgueiro.

While sharing her advice for young writers with The TV Junkies, Armstrong stressed how important it is to write about something you feel passionate about, and talk turned to death — a major theme in Mary Kills People.

TTVJ: Do you have any advice to share with other young writers?

TA: What comes to mind is the old adage of “write what you know,” and I think that’s really good when you’re starting out. Beyond that write what you’re fascinated by, and with Mary Kills People I had always been fascinated by death and knew I wanted to write about it. I heard someone say ‘Write what keeps you up at night,’ and for me that was death. I knew wanted to write about this topic that I feel like I can endlessly research and read about, watch documentaries about and feel very passionate about. Potentially you’re going to be living with this project for many years, so I think it should be something that keeps your interest. I wrote this so I could better understand my own feelings about death and reconcile the topic in my mind. I don’t think I’m any closer, and I don’t think I ever will be really, but I want to keep exploring it. If you can write about something you feel that strongly about then it’ll show in the material.

TTVJ: What I’m hearing is you’re definitely down for at least five seasons of Mary Kills People. [laughs]

TA: I definitely think there’s fodder for a lot of seasons because there’s no denying that assisted suicide is an incredibly complex topic. There’s many arguments for and against it, and I think all those arguments are valid and that we should explore them tirelessly. I don’t know that this is something we’ll ever completely figure out because of the complexity of the issue.

Similarly, in a interview with Metro News, Dhavernas not only admitted that she is interested in doing more seasons, but revealed talks regarding a second season renewal are underway.

And though the first season of Mary Kills People consists of just six episodes, we’d certainly like to see more of Dhavernas’ elegant mercy killer on screen. So would she.

“There are talks to do a second season and I hope there is. The writers already have some great ideas. I guess we just have to see how well this first round does.”

It may be that Global Television is waiting to see if Mary Kills People is also a hit in the US on Lifetime, before deciding to cancel or renew Mary Kills People for season two. Stay tuned.
