Melrose Place: Is Heather Locklear Enough to Save the New Show?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that this week’s episode of the new Melrose Place marked the return of Heather Locklear’s Amanda. It’s also no secret that the new Melrose Place has been struggling in the ratings.

The CW put a lot of promotion into letting TV viewers know that Locklear was coming and hoped that the original series’ most memorable character would help save the show.

Unfortunately, it seems like it’s a case of “too little, too late.” As expected, Tuesday’s episode did see a bump in the ratings — just not a very big one. In the coveted 18-49 demographic, the show registered a 0.8 rating, a slight increase from last week’s installment (0.7).

The news was slightly better in the 18-34 demos but still not enough to get excited about. For males and females, the 18-34 rating rose from a 0.8 to a 1.1 rating. For females alone (CW’s target demo), the rating came up from a 1.2 to a 1.6 this week.

If you play with percentages, those numbers look great. But really, it’s a case of a small number getting a little bigger. The best that one can say is that Locklear’s return gave the show its best numbers in this demo in six weeks. That’s still significantly lower than the premiere garnered back in September and those figures weren’t great.

Curiosity got a lot of people to tune in this week but only a percentage will return to see the next installment. Though it’s good to see Locklear back on the air, the ratings for the new Melrose Place are still terrible and certainly not enough to save it from cancellation.

What do you think? Was Amanda’s return all that you hoped for? Will the show see a second season or be cancelled?
