Broadway is coming to CMT. According to Deadline, the network has ordered a new limited series based on the Tony Award-Winning musical Million Dollar Quartet. Update 12/14/16: Million Dollar Quartet has been retitled as Sun Records and premieres 2/23/17 at 10:00pm on CMT.
The 2010 musical is based on the 1956 recording session featuring Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins.
The CMT series will feature eight episodes “set in Memphis during the tumultuous early days of the civil rights movement.” The project is currently casting and will begin shooting this spring. Leslie Greif and Gil Grant will serve as executive producers.
From CMT president Brian Philips:
Million Dollar Quartet will capture the star-crossed Memphis moments which led to the most explosive pop culture movement of the 20th Century, the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The characters are all larger-than-life, so casting is a daunting challenge, but we’re counting on the magic of Memphis to come alive again! This is among our most ambitious projects ever, and we entrust it to a proven epic filmmaker, Leslie Greif.”
