What can fans expect from The Mist TV series? Recently, executive producer Christian Torpe discussed Spike TV’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King book, TV Guide reports.
First published in 1980, the original story is set in a small Maine town that becomes enveloped in a strange and monstrous mist. The novella was developed into a film in 2007 starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, and Andre Braugher.
During this month’s Television Critics Association press tour, Torpe revealed the TV show will not be the same as the movie:
Let’s call it a reimagination. Internally, we talk about it as doing the Fargo approach, where the movie and the TV show is the same, but it’s different. It’s like a weird, twisted cousin to the original source material. Fans of the movie and of the book and of Mr. King’s work will certainly see elements from it. … We also, in order to develop it for TV and turn it into an ongoing series, took our own little detours here and there.”
He later mentioned that the show might also have a different ending from the book and the film from director Frank Darabont:
I personally love Mr. [Frank Darabont’s] ending. I thought it was a stroke of genius. We are playing around in that territory and we also know, of course, Mr. King’s ending. And I know Mr. King actually preferred Darabont’s ending And so I think we came up with our own spin on a very original and surprising ending.”
Spike TV has not yet announced a premiere date for The Mist, but it is expected to premiere later this year.
