Mr. Robot: Success Owed to Cancelled USA Series

Mr. Robot will return to USA in 2016 with season two. In fact, the series was picked up for its second season before season one even premiered.

What does this series owe its success too? According to Ad Week, Bonnie Hammer, chairman of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group, spoke about the success of Mr. Robot, and she connected the success of the series to a former USA Network series – Political Animals, which starred Sigourney Weaver and Sebastian Stan.

The series was cancelled after just six episodes in 2012. It was a bit darker and edgier than the programming usually seen on the network, but Political Animals did open the door for more edgier programming.

Hammer said:

“Political Animals was before its time: a little darker, a little edgier. The audience wasn’t ready for it. Those who were coming for Royal Pains and Suits were not ready for cocaine-addicted kids, a heavier hand in politics and for cloudier, edgier [material]. They weren’t anti-heroes, but they weren’t all nice and pretty and ‘blue skies.’ [We] realized that we had to figure out: ‘What does it mean to have some clouds in the sky, and how cloudy and edgy can we go?’ We took a few swings at bat, we didn’t nail it with the first couple, to be honest. [Rush] was an interesting, dark character in the medical world, but so what? Been there, done that before. We wanted to nail something in the zeitgeist, and that’s where Mr. Robot came.”

As for Political Animals, execs at USA did regret cancelling the series after the fact. Were you a fan of Political Animals? Will watch Mr. Robot season two? Tell us what you think.
