Murphy Brown: Creator Teases CBS Revival and Return of Another Original Cast Member

Murphy Brown TV show on CBS: (canceled or renewed?)

What’s in store for the new Murphy Brown series? Recently, creator Diane English teased the upcoming CBS TV show revival, TVLine reports.

As reported earlier, CBS has ordered 13 episodes for a Murphy Brown reboot. The sitcom originally premiered in 1988 and starred Candice Bergen as the titular Murphy Brown, a recovering alcoholic and investigative journalist who returns to host the fictional TV news program, FYI. The cast also included Faith Ford, Pat Corley, Charles Kimbrough, and Lily Tomlin. The show ran on CBS for 10 seasons before ending in 1998.

During this summer’s TCA press conference, English revealed the Murphy Brown revival will address the Trump presidency, the issue of fake news, and the advent of social media:

The freedom of the press is under attack like never before. The press is not the enemy of the people. And these characters are the press. … When we left these characters in 1998, there was no internet. There was no social media. Cable news was just getting started. To take these characters and put them in the world of cable news [is] very rich.”

What else can fans expect? Original cast member Charles Kimbrough will return as Jim Dial for three episodes and viewers can expect a big cameo in the premiere. English teased: “We have an enormously famous person in our first episode.”

CBS‘ Murphy Brown revival premieres on September 27th at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.
