The Musketeers: Series to Have “Extraordinary” Ending

The Musketeers TV show on BBC

Things may not end well for The Musketeers. In a recent interview with Digital Spy, the BBC series’ executive producers said fans can expect a dark final season.

Earlier, we reported that all three seasons of the UK drama are available in the U.S. on Hulu as of May 14th. The action series stars Luke Pasqualino, Tom Burke, Santiago Cabrera, and Howard Charles as D’Artagnan, Athos, Aramis, and Porthos from Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Three Musketeers.

Discussing the third and last season, co-showrunner Simon Allen said the show goes to unexpected places in its final moments:

We go to places that I think shows very rarely get to go to – because we knew it was the end. The heroes do lose in this series – and because they lose, the jeopardy’s higher and you care more. You fear for them – and worry that this is not going to go well.”

EP Jessica Pope teased plenty of bloodshed for the last few episodes:

We have so many sword fights that it would’ve become a bloodbath! So it wasn’t that we were trying to be tame, we were just trying to not have everybody covered in blood for the entire hour – and I think it’s effective.”

She added that the third season will be “extraordinary”:

The brilliant thing was, once we did know it was going to be the last season, we could play to that. so instead of doing a rather unsatisfying ambiguous end, we knew we could do something extraordinary – which we have done.”

The third and final season of The Musketeers begins on BBC One on May 28th at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.
