Nashville: The Happy Ending You Didn’t See

Nashville TV show on ABC: season 4, canceled; no season 5.

Nashville TV series finale on ABC. Hayden Panettiere, Ed Amatrudo (ABC/Mark Levine).

SPOILERS. Reportedly, there was a happy ending to last night’s Nashville TV series finale, “Maybe You’ll Appreciate Me Someday.” It seems Lionsgate TV nixed the sweet denouement in favor of a shocking cliffhanger, in an effort to market future seasons of the Country-Western music drama to new buyers. ABC  recently cancelled Nashville, starring Connie Britton, Charles Esten, and Clare Bowen, after four seasons.

In the aired Nashville finale, Juliette’s (Hayden Panettiere) plane went missing and she was feared dead. According to TV Line, another version of the finale had Juliette land safely and reunite with Avery (Jonathan Jackson).

TV Line says:

Reps for ABC and Lionsgate declined to comment, but a source close to Lionsgate tells TVLine that the studio “is fully confident that there’s much more Nashville to be told. Tonight’s Season 4 finale ending speaks to that confidence. Not to frustrate or disappoint fans, rather Lionsgate, ABC Studios and Opry Entertainment are listening to fans’ outpouring of support online for more.”

For its part, it looks like Lionsgate TV had a tweet all lined up for the moment the Nashville TV show concluded its ABC run. Check it out.

What do you think? Have you taken part in the social media campaign to find the Nashville TV series a new home for its fifth season? Are you glad Lionsgate promoted a risky strategy in order to sell the show, or are you angry you didn’t get closure?
