Nashville: Two Not Returning for Season Five on CMT

Nashville TV show on CMT Will Chase not returning for season 5 (canceled or renewed?)

The long goodbye… Will Chase (Luke Wheeler) and Aubrey Peeples (Layla Grant) are unlikely to be part of the Nashville TV series cast in its fifth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This news comes less than two weeks after CMT  picked up Nashville season five, after ABC abruptly cancelled the fan-favorite Country Music drama series.

THR says Chase and Peeples will probably be the only Nashville series regulars who won’t make the leap to CMT. Reportedly, talks with the other stars are going well, including Connie Britton, as well as Hayden Panettiere, whose future was in question after fourth season’s cliffhanger finale.

Here is more, from The Hollywood Reporter:

In terms of story, the news is not entirely surprising. Chase’s Luke Wheeler was introduced as a new love interest for Connie Britton’s Rayna in season two. Chase was promoted to series regular in season three, but once the writers opted to reunite Rayna with on-and-off love interest Deacon (Charles Esten) once and for all — the two married this past season — it became more of a struggle to intermix Luke with the rest of the ensemble, save for his recent friendship with Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) and Will Lexington (Chris Carmack).

As for Peeples, she was promoted to a series regular in season four after recurring heavily for two seasons as up-and-coming singer Layla Grant. Layla’s main love interest, Jeff Fordham (former series regular Oliver Hudson) was killed off at the beginning of season four after the actor signed on for another series, Scream Queens. Peeples was subsequently absent from several episodes due to commitments to the Jem and the Holograms remake, in which she starred.
