UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – October 2, 2012 – NBC has finished #1 in adults 18-49 for premiere week of the 2012-13 television season, marking the network’s first outright victory during premiere week since 2003. Led by “Sunday Night Football,” “The Voice” and “Go On,” NBC delivered an average 2.9 rating, 8 share in adults 18-49 and 8.2 million viewers overall for the primetime ratings week of September 24-30, according to “live plus same day” viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.
The 2.9 rating in 18-49 makes this NBC’s highest-rated premiere week in four years, since 2008. NBC topped its year-ago premiere-week rating by 12 percent in 18-49 (with a 2.9 rating vs. a 2.6) and was up by 9 percent in total viewers (8.2 million vs. 7.5 million), making NBC the only network among ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox up year to year in either category. NBC was also up versus last year’s premiere week in every other key ratings category.
For the week, NBC is #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49, adults 25-54, men 25-54, men 18-49, women 18-49 (tie) and men 18-34 (tie). NBC has now finished #1 or tied for #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in 18-49 for eight of the last 10 weeks.
NBC’s premiere-week schedule included the week’s #1 series in 18-49 (“Sunday Night Football”), the week’s #1 and #2 unscripted telecasts (the Monday and Tuesday editions of “The Voice”), the #1 new series (“Revolution”) and the #2 new comedy (“Go On”).
NBC was up in 18-49 rating versus premiere week last year on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday and tied with the year-ago night on Saturday.
NBC Sports’ Giants-Eagles “Sunday Night Football” coverage delivered the #1 primetime rating of the week on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, total viewers and all key adult-male categories. “Sunday Night Football” has now been #1 in 18-49 and total viewers for four of four weeks so far this NFL season and has delivered more than 21 million viewers with each telecast through week four for the first time in its seven seasons on NBC. In 18-49, top NBC programs for the week included “Sunday Night Football (#1), Monday and Tuesday editions of “The Voice” (tied for #4 and #6 outright), “Revolution” (tied for #13) and “Go On” (#28) (rankings exclude sports pre- and post-game shows).

Primetime averages for the week of September 24-30 in adults 18-49 were: NBC, 2.9/8; Fox, 2.6/8; CBS, 2.4/7; ABC, 2.2/6; and CW, 0.3/1. In overall total viewers, the weekly averages were: CBS, 10.7 million; ABC, 8.3 million; NBC, 8.2 million; Fox, 7.0 million; and CW, 0.7 million.

Despite the arrival of season-premiere competition on ABC and CBS, “The Voice” finished within 6 percent of the prior week’s 4.7 in 18-49. The September 24 “Voice” delivered growth throughout its time period, generating this track in 18-49 rating: 3.5, 4.2, 4.8, 4.9, for a gain of 1.4 rating points or 40 percent from the show’s first half-hour to its fourth. In total viewers, the increase was 27 percent or nearly 2.9 million persons (13.1 million vs. 10.4 million). “The Voice” was up 47 percent versus NBC’s 18-49 average in the time period last season (4.4 vs. 3.0) and up 40 percent in total viewers (12.2 million vs. 8.7 million). Versus its averages for the show’s final four Monday telecasts last spring, “The Voice” was up 19 percent in 18-49 (4.4 vs. 3.7) and 20 percent in total viewers (12.2 vs. 10.1 million).
Monday from 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “Revolution” (3.4/9 in adults 18-49, 9.2 million viewers overall) ranked #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49 and all other key demographics. “Revolution” retained 82 percent of the prior week’s powerful premiere rating despite the arrival of competition this week from CBS’s “Hawaii Five-0” and ABC’s “Castle.” “Revolution’s” 18-49 margin of victory in the hour was 62 percent versus “Castle” (3.4 vs. 2.1) and 89 percent versus “Hawaii Five-0” (3.4 vs. 1.8). “Revolution’s” 3.4 rating matches or tops the ratings of every telecast of every regular 10 p.m. drama on ABC, CBS and NBC last season except for the February 6 premiere of “Smash.” “Revolution” was up 113 percent versus NBC’s average in the time period last season in 18-49 rating (3.4 vs. 1.6, L+SD non-sports) and up 80 percent in total viewers (9.213 million vs. 5.106 million).
Note that “Revolution” has started out as a highly time-shifted show, with its September 17 premiere having added 1.36 rating points to the L+SD 4.09 in “live plus three day” results (5.45), for what was at the time the biggest increase ever from L+SD to L+3 for NBC and biggest ever for a series debut on any network (with the previous high being 1.14 for Fox’s “The New Girl”). In those “live plus three day” results, “Revolution’s 5.4 makes it NBC’s top 10 p.m. premiere in nearly eight years, since “Medium” (6.3 on January 3, 2005), excluding previews.
Then the September 24 telecast of “Revolution” grew by 1.74 points from its “live plus same day” rating (3.45) to “live plus three day” (5.19), breaking the show’s record from the previous week for the largest increase from L+SD to L+3 ever for an NBC telecast. The only other series that’s ever matched or topped that 1.74 increase is ABC’s “Modern Family.” With that increase, Week 2 of “Revolution” finished within 5 percent of its premiere rating in L+3 (5.19 vs. 5.45), and that’s despite the arrival in Week 2 of time-period competition from the season premieres of “Hawaii Five-0” and “Castle.” “Revolution” was the top gainer on Monday and Tuesday of this week in 18-49 and total viewers, going in total viewers from 9.213 million to 12.948 million (+3.735 million), an increase that’s a full million more than the #2 Monday-Tuesday gainer, NCIS (+2.729 million).

On Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 8-9:01 p.m. ET, “The Voice” (4.2/12 in 18-49, 11.6 million viewers overall) finished #1 in the time period and for the night among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49. Despite the arrival of competition this week from the season premieres of CBS’s “NCIS,” Fox’s “The New Girl” and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show, week three of “The Voice” finished within 11 percent of the prior week’s 4.7 rating in official nationals. “The Voice” was up 27 percent versus last season’s third Tuesday telecast (with a 4.2 rating vs. a 3.3 for a Results Show from 9-10 p.m. on April 17) and up 31 percent in total viewers (11.6 million vs. 8.9 million). “The Voice” was up 110 percent versus NBC’s average in the time period last season in 18-49 rating (4.2 vs. 2.0) and up 89 percent in total viewers (11.6 million vs. 6.1 million). From its first half-hour to its second, “The Voice” grew by 0.7 of a point or 18 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 4.5 from a 3.8) and by 14 percent or 1.5 million persons in total viewers (12.3 million vs. 10.8 million).
Tuesday from 9:01-9:31 p.m. ET, the third regular telecast of “Go On” (2.7/7 in 18-49, 6.9 million viewers overall) finished within a tenth of a rating point of Fox’s season premiere of “The New Girl” for #2 in the competitive time period in adults 18-49, and rated ahead of ABC’s season premiere of the “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show (2.4/7 that half-hour). Despite the arrival this week of competition from the regular-slot premiere of Fox’s “The New Girl” and season debuts of CBS’s “NCIS: LA” and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show, “Go On” ranked #2 in the half-hour among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-34 and tied for #2 in adults 25-54. “Go On” was up 13 percent versus NBC’s average in the time period last season in 18-49 rating (2.7 vs. 2.4).
Tuesday from 9:31-10:01 p.m. ET, “The New Normal” (2.0/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million in total viewers) retained 74 percent of its 18-49 lead-in from “Go On,” up from the prior week’s 65 percent. In total viewers, “Animal Practice” improved on NBC’s average in the time period last season by 5 percent (5.2 million vs. 4.9 million, L+SD non-sports) in a highly competitive half-hour versus Fox’s “The X Factor,” CBS’s “Survivor” and ABC’s season premiere of “The Middle.”

From its first half-hour to its second, the “Revolution” rebroadcast grew by a tenth of a rating point in adults 18-49 (to a 0.6 from a 0.5) and adults 25-54 (0.8 vs. 0.7).
Saturday from 9-11 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” delivered a 0.8/3 in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall, capturing “SVU’s” best Saturday 18-49 rating since July 21 and biggest overall audience for a Saturday encore since May 19. From its first half-hour to its fourth, “SVU” grew by 50 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 0.9 rating from a 0.6), 44 percent in adults 25-54 (1.3 vs. 0.9) and 38 percent or more than 1.2 million persons in total viewers (4.6 million vs. 3.4).
On Sunday, Sept. 30, the “NBC Sunday Night Football” telecast of the New York Giants at the Philadelphia Eagles propelled NBC to a Sunday win by all key measures. For its full duration, the Giants-Eagles game averaged a 9.0/23 in adults 18-49, 22.8 million viewers overall and a 14.1/22 household rating/share from 8:31-11:42 p.m. ET. The Giants-Eagles telecast generated the best 18-49 and total-viewer results ever for a week-four edition of “Sunday Night Football” and the top total-viewer results for an NFL week-four primetime game since 1996 (Dolphins-Colts) and best in household rating since 1997. The 18-49 rating and overall viewership for Sunday’s game was up 17 percent and 20 percent, respectively, from last year’s week-four contest, (Jets-Ravens, 7.7 in 18-49, 18.9 million viewers overall). It was also the top NFL primetime game versus the opening week of the television season since 1995 (Steelers-Dolphins) and highest-rated in households during the TV season’s opening week since 1999 (Falcons-Cowboys).
For the night (from 7:30-11 p.m. ET), NBC averaged a 7.4/19 in 18-49 and 18.8 million viewers overall, to win the night in total viewers by 54 percent or more than 6.5 million persons over the second-place network (18.8 million vs. 12.3 million for Fox, which was boosted by an NFL overrun). In adults 18-49, NBC’s margin of victory over the #2 network was 45 percent (7.4 vs. 5.1 for Fox).
Also on Sunday, “Football Night in America 2” from 7:30-7:56 p.m. ET averaged a 1.2/4 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall and a 2.3/4 household rating/share. “Football Night in America 3” from 7:56-8:22 p.m. delivered a 4.7/13 in 18-49, 12.4 million viewers overall and a 7.6/12 in households. From 8:22-8:31 p.m., “NBC Sunday Night Football Pre Kickoff” averaged a 6.6/18 in 18-49, 17.0 million viewers overall and a 10.4/17 in households. Note: “Football Night in America” from 7-7:30 p.m. ET was sustaining and is excluded from nightly and weekly primetime averages.
