It looks like The New Celebrity Apprentice has been fired. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt says that the network has no plans to bring back the reality competition.
Hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the new incarnation of the competition series followed a group of 16 business-savvy personalities perform in challenges as they try to win the competition while raising money and awareness for favorite charities. Season eight contestants included Laila Ali, Brooke Burke-Charvet, Eric Dickerson, Boy George, Matt Iseman, Carrie Keagan, Carson Kressley, Lisa Leslie, Jon Lovitz, Vince Neil, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Kyle Richards, Chael Sonnen, Porsha Williams, Ricky Williams, and Carnie Wilson.
The New Celebrity Apprentice had trouble from the beginning, given the show’s ties to former host and now President Donald Trump. First, NBC cut the show’s finale from two hours down to one. Later, Schwarzenegger announced he would not return to the series if it were renewed, citing the show’s “baggage” as the reason. And then, half of the show’s sponsors left over threats of boycotting due to Trump’s involvement with the series.
Not to mention, the reality show reboot did not do so well in the ratings. The new season earned an average rating of 1.05 in the 18-49 demo and only 3.966 million viewers. It looks like that “baggage” really did sink The New Celebrity Apprentice.
At the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, Greenblatt said, “It’s really on the shelf and I don’t think we have any plans to bring it back… I don’t know when we would start thinking about it again. I think it really is a dry dock.”
