Is The New Celebrity Apprentice on its way out? The Wrap and Deadline report Arnold Schwarzenegger and sponsors have left the NBC series.
Hosted by Schwarzenegger, the reboot featured 16 new celebrities competing in business-related challenges for the chance to raise money for charity. The contestants included Laila Ali, Brooke Burke-Charvet, Eric Dickerson, Boy George, Matt Iseman, Carrie Keagan, Carson Kressley, Lisa Leslie, Jon Lovitz, Vince Neil, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, and Kyle Richards. Season one of the series ended on February 13th.
The odds of a renewal for The New Celebrity Apprentice were already unlikely. NBC cut the show’s planned two-hour finale down to one hour and the series’ ratings were not good. The reboot earned an average rating of 1.05 in the 18-49 demo and only 3.966 million viewers.
Now, its seems even more likely the show will be cancelled. Today, Schwarzenegger issued a statement saying he will not return for a second season of the series, citing the show’s “baggage” as the reason:
I loved every second of working with NBC and Mark Burnett. Everyone – from the celebrities to the crew to the marketing department – was a straight 10, and I would absolutely work with all of them again on a show that doesn’t have this baggage.”
That “baggage” is almost certainly former host Donald Trump, who has caused further trouble for The New Celebrity Apprentice. The Wrap reports half of the show’s sponsors have bailed over threats of boycotting due to Trump’s involvement with the series.
NBC has not yet commented on whether they will renew The New Celebrity Apprentice or not.
