Will New Girl be back for a seventh season? Recently, star Jake Johnson spoke with The Daily Beast about the future of the FOX TV series.
Johnson plays Nick on the long-running sitcom, which also stars Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone as a group of friends who share an apartment in Los Angeles.
In the interview, Johnson mentioned FOX hasn’t renewed the series for a seventh season yet and the season six finale could serve as a series finale if need be:
Fox won’t tell us [whether the show will be renewed]. But we shot a finale where, if this was the end, the core fan base would be OK.”
Later, he said he thinks “after this season it’s done.” It’s true that season six of New Girl has struggled in the ratings. So far, the season is averaging a .95 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.076 million viewers — quite low for a broadcast network like FOX. However, season five also received poor ratings and the show was renewed anyways.
On Twitter, Johnson clarified that the show actually has a “50/50” chance of coming back:
