Talk about patience. In a recent BBC Radio interview, Tom Hiddleston said Hugh Laurie’s been trying to get AMC’s upcoming mini-series, The Night Manager, on screen for 20 years.
The limited series is based on John le Carré’s 1993 novel of the same name.
In The Night Manager, Hiddleston plays Jonathan Pine, a hotel manager recruited by MI6 to infiltrate the inner world of international arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie).
In the radio interview, Hiddleston says the series is faithful to the tone of the original novel:
The scripts were so exciting and so sophisticated. It has the stitching of le Carré’s storytelling ability, which feels so real. Le Carré is a man who himself was a spy. He understands the nuances of how things work at MI6 and international relations and the delicacy of diplomacy and agent running. He was very active in the adaptation.”
Hiddleston added that Hugh Laurie is a huge le Carré fan and brought a lot of expertise to the role and production:
The best thing about Hugh’s casting is that he brings with him all the likability and sophistication we associate with him. Roper is educated and kind and affable, deeply english, and good to his family. But he sells chemical weapons to the highest bidder in the Middle East with no moral compunctions about that at all. He himself is a huge le Carré fan and has been trying to get The Night Manager on screen for about 20 years. So his authority and his enthusiasm is great. He’s also hilarious.”
The Night Manager premieres on AMC on April 19th at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
