The Patty Duke Show: The Cast Reunites to help the Social Security Administration

A popular TV series in the ’60s, The Patty Duke Show revolves around identical cousins (what are the chances of that?). Patty Duke plays both parts; world traveler Cathy and typical Brooklyn Heights teenager Patty. Cathy comes to live with her cousin and her family to attend school while her father works as a world correspondent overseas. Others in the cast include William Schallert, Jean Byron, Paul O’Keefe, and Eddie Applegate.

The sitcom lasted for 104 episodes and three seasons on ABC, from 1963 until 1966. Though the series was still fairly popular, the network decided against a fourth season because it would have been expensive to start filming it in color.

The show didn’t get a true series finale but the cast reprised their characters in 1999 for a CBS reunion movie, The Patty Duke Show: Still Rockin’ In Brooklyn Heights. Cathy is a widow, living with her son in Scotland. Patty and Richard married after high school, had a son, but later divorced. By the end of the movie, they were on their way to reconciliation.

Well, it appears that Patty and Richard are still together. Duke, Schallert, O’Keefe, and Applegate have reprised their roles for a series of public service announcements for the Social Security Administration. In one spot, Patty tells Cathy that she and Richard are going downtown to fill out paperwork for Social Security. Worldly Cathy informs her that she can do it all online in about 15 minutes.

Other spots show the rest of the surviving cast and they include happen to mention other classic TV show characters like Marcus Welby, MD and Gidget.

Duke, O’Keefe, and Applegate recently attended an event at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills to promote the campaign. Schallert was scheduled to attend but it appears he wasn’t there. Byron, who played Patty’s Mom, passed away in 2006.

What do you think? Is it good to see the cast of The Patty Duke Show back together again? Would you like to see them back in a regular series somehow?
