The recent end of Penny Dreadful was a bit of a surprise for everyone, except for those behind the scenes. Recently, Showtime CEO David Nevins discussed the series’ abrupt end, TVLine reports.
From John Logan, the supernatural drama took place in Victorian-era London and explored several dark mysteries lying beneath the city’s surface. The cast included Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, and Billie Piper.
At the TCA summer press tour, Nevins said Logan had always planned three seasons of the show:
We could have announced it [was the final season] before the final season, and we decided not to. In [John’s] mind it was always three [seasons] and out. From early on, we were trying to keep it open for possibility of more, but it became clear that trying to continue the show past the life of Vanessa Ives would be a lesserment. And John didn’t really want to continue beyond that character.”
