Pushing Daisies showcases the talents of performers like Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Chi McBride, Jim Dale, Ellen Greene, Swoosie Kurtz, Field Cate, Sean Lake, Sy Richardson, and Chenoweth. The fantasy TV show debuted on October 3, 2007 on ABC. Despite sagging ratings in season one, the network renewed Daisies for a second year. The size of the audience didn’t improve and ABC recently decided to pull the plug after 22 total episodes. Viewers will get some closure if/when the final episode airs.
The series’ creator, Bryan Fuller, has expressed interest in continuing the show in movie and comic book form. Those plans haven’t stopped one of the series’ stars from coming up with ideas for her character’s personal happy ending.
Chenoweth was recently interviewed to help promote TNT’s annual music concert Christmas in Washington that airs tomorrow night. When asked if she’d thought about Olive’s future life, the actress joked, “I’m just crazy enough to have planned out the whole next [season].”
Though Chenoweth cautions that these ideas are her own concoction and not Fuller’s, she says, “I have always envisioned that Ned eventually sees that he can have a real relationship with Olive. I have to believe that as an actress because I have to play her.”
She continues, “They do introduce Randy (David Arquette’s character) in the upcoming shows and I think that, if we were to go on, you would see that maybe Olive could move forward, not [move] on, but forward with somebody and find happiness. But I always pictured that Ned saw [this] and got a little jealous.”

goes on to say, “I see her eventually, you know, getting in a relationship and still maybe not being completely satisfied, like many women are. They move forward but they never, they always have that one love.”
The actress says that she’s always played the role as if something serious would have happened between Olive and Ned if Chuck hadn’t shown up. “I think Ned and Chuck have this -– they kind of love that they have the fantasy world. But eventually, they’re both going to want [something] real, the touch. So anyway, you know, I don’t know if Ned and Olive will ultimately end up together.”
Her ideas for how the colorful story could end are, as Chenoweth readily admits, a little bit creepy. “I’m crazy. I think ahead like this. But I was always hoping that Ned was an old man and that Olive and Emerson had been brought back to life. Eventually Olive would know what the deal was. And then they would all four be together, even though they couldn’t touch.”
“I just kind of always thought that the four of them would never really let each other go. And even though Olive drives Emerson crazy, there’s a special relationship there.”
As you might expect, Chenoweth is still a bit upset about the way the Daisies series is coming to an end. Though it’s been reported that it was Fuller’s choice not to wrap up the story in the finale, she maintains that the decision was ABC’s. She says, “Our creator Bryan Fuller specifically asked if he could write an episode to write everything off and ABC specifically said, ‘No don’t do that.’ Because you never know what’s going to happen, see we didn’t know until recently that we were cancelled. So we went ahead and shot an episode thinking that they could be a possibility that we’d come back. Which you know is kind of a bummer, because our fans will be kind of like wait a minute, wait, what happens?”
Like many of the show’s fans, Chenoweth hopes that the cast and crew can reunite for a Daisies movie. She’d like to see the show continue in illustrated form as well, noting, “even though that would, you know, suck for us [the actors] because we are not comic book characters. We can’t like act those out. At least the fans will get closure and to be honest so would we… I’m extremely sad. I wished we could have had an episode where we wrapped it up.”
“Just keep on the lookout and hopefully there’ll be a movie. That’s why I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”
