Reign: CW Series Creator Discusses Season Five Ideas

We already know Reign won’t be returning for another season, but that doesn’t mean the story is over. Recently, creator Laurie McCarthy spoke with TVLine about her ideas for the future of the cancelled CW TV show.

The historical drama centers on the turbulent life of Mary, Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane). The cat also includes Megan Follows, Rachel Skarsten, Celina Sinden, Craig Parker, Rose Williams, Ben Geurens, Dan Jeannotte, Jonathan Goad, Spencer MacPherson, and Will Kemp.

Last year, The CW cancelled Reign mid-way through its season four production. And while McCarthy says they were able to craft a satisfying end to the series, there were several plans and ideas left out:

There were three characters who I felt were really under-serviced this season. For Claude, we had really wanted to show the interesting dynamic of her giving up this first passion, her first love with Leith, and where she would go moving forward. Greer and James were also characters where every day there were just pages in and pages out. It was excruciating not to service those characters more.”

McCarthy later mentioned what would’ve happened if Reign was renewed for a fifth season:

You could just go on and on, particularly with Elizabeth and Catherine. And there could have been a very strong fifth season with Mary, following the trajectory of her third marriage, which was to Bothwell. In Scotland, we would have told a tale that was as much as a western as a political drama; she’d be on the run, there would be sieges, there would be a falling out with her brother — there’s a lot that we would have loved to have gotten our arms around. And with Catherine, there was a daughter we had yet to meet whose wedding left Paris running with blood. There was truly a lot.”

The series finale of Reign premieres tonight, June 16th, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
