Filming has begun on the fourth season of the Reign TV show on The CW. The fanciful historical series stars Adelaide Kane, Megan Follows, Anna Popplewell, and Celina Sinden. Below, check out the announcement tweet from the show’s writers. Reign was renewed along with virtually the rest of The CW’s slate, back in March. For a while though, it looked as though Reign might be cancelled during season three.
The CW has already announced that fans will have to wait for mid-season to watch Reign, season four. That may be a blessing in disguise. In its third season — the first time it aired on Fridays and without The Vampire Diaries as its lead-in — the show suffered from some erratic scheduling. Season three of Reign premiered Friday, October 9, 2015, but while this season had fewer episodes (18; the first two seasons were 22 episodes, each), the season three finale does not air until June 20, 2016.
Three episodes aired over the first three weeks of season three, then Reign was preempted on October 30 for Halloween-related programming. It returned to the schedule on November 6, and again aired three weeks in a row, then was off the schedule, until the December 4th episode, “The Hound and the Hare.”
The next new episode was “Our Undoing” on January 8, 2016. Yet again, Reign ran three weeks in a row. The mid-season finale, “Bruises that Lie,” aired January 22.
After that, Reign went on a mid-season hiatus without an announced return date. During the second half of season three, Reign changed nights again and returned with episode 11, “Succession,” on Monday, April 25. Since season 3B premiered, the only break occurred on Monday, May 30th, Memorial Day.
In its first season, Reign averaged a 0.58 in the 18-49 year old viewer ratings demographic and drew an average total audience of 1.57 million viewers. In season two, Reign averaged a 0.39 in the demo and drew an average total audience of 1.08 million viewers.
In this third, disrupted season, Reign hasn’t done all that much worse, ratings-wise. As of the June 6 episode, the season average was 0.30 in the demo and the average audience size was 0.983 million viewers. Perhaps holding Reign‘s season four premiere until midseason, will help the drama rebuild its audience.
