Reno 911!: Comedy Central Pulls the Plug on Cops Series

After six seasons, Comedy Central has cancelled their mockumentary series, Reno 911!.

The satirical program is based on FOX’s Cops reality show that follows real police officers as they capture criminals on urban streets. Reno 911! follows the members of a fictitious police department in Reno, Nevada. Filled with lots of politically-incorrect humor, much of the episodes are improvised.

The ensemble cast includes Cedric Yarbrough, Niecy Nash, Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney, Carlos Alazraqui, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Mary Birdsong, Nick Swardson, Toby Huss, and Jim Rash.

The show has been a staple of the Comedy Central cable channel since 2003. It was so successful that it spawned a feature film, Reno 911: Miami, in 2007. The movie didn’t break any box office records but later earned over $16 million in DVD sales and led to a second, extra-unrated, release.

Should Reno 911! have been cancelled?

Season six of Reno 911! debuted on April 1st of this year and finished airing last month. Comedy Central apparently feels that, despite decent ratings, 88 episodes is enough. According to one of its stars, they’ve cancelled the series.

Yesterday, Lennon broke the news via Twitter. He wrote, “Reno 911! was cancelled at 1:30 pm today. Won’t be wearing the shorts again.

Though the show has been officially cancelled, there’s been no word if the crazy cops might return someday, either in specials or another movie. What do you think? Would you like to see that?
