Rick and Morty: Dan Harmon Discusses the Season Three Delay

While Adult Swim renewed the Rick and Morty TV show for season three back in August 2015, it has been off the air so long, it now feels as though it’s cancelled. During the Sundance Film Festival, co-creator Dan Harmon took the blame for the long delay between seasons.

IndieWire reports Harmon told the crowd, “I’m so sorry. I don’t have a release date for [Rick and Morty] Season 3. It’s not that I know it and I’m not allowed to say it; it’s [Adult Swim’s] domain. What I will tell you is it’s late because of us. It’s late because of me. If [co-creator] Justin [Roiland] were here he’d agree.”

Skipping over some of Harmon’s more colorful comments, the Community vet admitted it’s difficult to put his finger on how they messed up. “Rick and Morty keeps taking longer and longer to write, and I don’t know why.”

According to the report, Harmon confessed that there have been creative difficulties. “We have fights all the time and then we have fights about why we’re having fights. Well, we didn’t fight during Season 2, that’s why it’s taking longer! All this fighting! So OK, let’s stop fighting!” That’s the ticket, Dan. Stop fighting and start writing.

The last new episode of Rick and Morty, season two, aired in October of 2015. The news outlet also reports that an Adult Swim spokesperson has confirmed they’re still not ready to announce a premiere date and said the show is still “deep in production.”

In answer to repeated fan questions about the status of Rick and Morty, season three, Harmon has since pinned a tweet to the top of his Twitter page which reads, “They’re drawing it. Man, why did I just now think about PINNING THIS.”
