Riverdale: CW Series to Get Comics Adaptation

Riverdale TV show on The CW

The CW’s new Archie series is honoring its origin. TV Guide reports the upcoming show Riverdale is getting its own comic book adaptation.

From Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and executive producer Greg Berlanti, the teen drama will be a subversive and gritty take on the classic Archie Comics universe. The cast includes KJ Apa, Luke Perry, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, and Mädchen Amick.

The one-shot comic will take place before the Riverdale pilot and then “spin off into an ongoing comic book series of its own.” Showrunner Aguirre-Sacasa will write the comic alongside artist Alitha Martinez and some of the Riverdale writing staff.

From Aguirre-Sacasa:

The chance to explore the world of Riverdale in a comic book — the form that first introduced the world to Archie, the love triangle, his hometown — was something we couldn’t pass up. Believe me, these stories matter. If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll find that the comics add another layer of conflict and drama. If you’re an Archie Comics fan, this series will serve as a great set of standalone stories in the universe of the TV series. We — myself and the show’s writers — are treating the comics with the same care and attention to detail fans will see on the screen as we weave one, large unforgettable narrative.”

Riverdale is slated to premiere in 2017.
