Riverdale: Could Zombies or Witches Take Over Season Two?

Riverdale TV show on The CW: (canceled or renewed?)

Are there monsters in Riverdale? Recently, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teased some possible plans for season two of the CW series, EW reports.

Based on Archie Comics, the drama follows the residents of a small town after the death of a popular high school student. The cast includes KJ Apa, Cole Sprouse, Luke Perry, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Mädchen Amick, Marisol Nichols, Casey Cott, and Madelaine Petsch.

Given that Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the zombie comic Afterlife with Archie and Sabrina the Teenage Witch is part of the Archie Comics universe, fans have started to suggest that Riverdale might take a supernatural turn in season two. The showrunner responded:

There’s a chance that happens. Ultimately we ended up starting with a more grounded, less supernatural version because we thought we could always go there, but if we started there, it would be hard to take that away.

In my mind, the mythology is this: Riverdale is a non-magical grounded town with weird stuff happening. Then there’s Sweetwater River, where Jason died, and on the other side of that river is Greendale, where Sabrina and the witches traditionally live. On one side of the river, there’s no magic, there’s no supernatural — that’s where Riverdale is. And on the other side of the mythic river, which is sort of like the River Styx, there’s magic and witches and dark Lovecraftian horrors.

Afterlife or not, there will definitely be a big genre element to season 2,” he says. “It’s going to make people go, ‘They’re not really doing that, are they?’”

The CW has already renewed Riverdale for a second season.

What do you think? Are you watching Riverdale? Do you think the show should go supernatural?
