Roadies: Cameron Crowe Discusses New Showtime Series

Roadies

Showtime is hitting the road. At the winter TCA press tour this week,  Cameron Crowe discussed his new Showtime series, Roadies.

The 10-episode first season will premiere in Summer 2016.

Starring Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino, and Rafe Spall, Roadies will follow a road crew that works with a touring rock band. Speaking at the press conference, Crowe said his inspiration for the series came from his 2000 film about rock and the road, Almost Famous:

I love music and I love stories where music is a character. I think over time I was struck how ‘Almost Famous’ spoke to people. I wanted to revisit the world of writing about music but in a contemporary setting.”

The series also comes from Crowe’s younger days a rock journalist. Before working in film, Crowe wrote and edited for Rolling Stone.

Crowe both wrote and directed the pilot for Roadies, with J.J. Abrams serving as an executive producer. In the interview, Abrams added that Roadies has been in development for years:

Many, many years before ‘Star Wars’ started shooting or even came up, Cameron and I started working on this show. I don’t think anyone can claim to share the rock star background that Cameron has. Twenty minutes with Cameron, hearing stories that he has, rivals the best possible story in music that any of us would have.”
