Robert De Niro, Julianne Moore to Star in David O. Russell Drama Series

David O. Russell is developing a TV show drama and Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore are attached as leads, according to Deadline. That’s right. These Oscar winners may be starring in a TV series, not a feature film. Megan Ellison, Alexandra Milchan, and Scott Lambert will reportedly produce.

The new project is rumored to be a “crime/cop thriller,” possibly set in the 1990s, aimed at cable or a streaming platform. While the report says it is not clear whether the project will have regular length seasons or run as a limited series (we’d bet on the latter, given the status of the leads), it is rumored it will be “designed to run multiple seasons.”

Deadline‘s Nellie Andreeva says,

With the auspices involved, it is expected to net a series order. In fact, I hear that offers for big commitments are being solicited prior to the pitch going out, which is very rare for a TV series. It underscores just how competitive the current television landscape is, especially when A-list feature talent is involved.

The Untitled David O. Russell drama series would reunite De Niro with the filmmaker, with whom he worked on the Silver Linings Playbook and Joy feature films.

Moore’s recent TV work includes guest star turns on NBC‘s 30 Rock as Nancy Donovan between 2009 and 2013. She also starred as Sarah Palin in the HBO movie Game Change. Moore broke into the business playing Frannie Hughes on the cancelled CBS soap opera, As the World Turns.

Aside from a 2013 appearance on Saturday Night Live, De Niro guest starred as himself in a 2011 episode of 30 Rock and played Jonathan Ross in a 2006 episode of HBO’s Extras. He will next appear as Bernie Madoff in The Wizard of Lies TV movie, also on HBO. Additionally, the first two films in The Godfather franchise later aired as a TV mini-series.
