Who is the new Kunta Kinte? Entertainment Weekly has released new photos from History’s upcoming remake of the classic mini-series, Roots.
Based on the book by Alex Haley, Roots tells the story of Kunta Kinte, a young African man kidnapped into slavery, and his descendants.
In the new Roots mini-series, Kunta is played by newcomer Malachi Kirby. Alongside him, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Anna Paquin, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Matthew Goode, Anika Noni Rose, and Mekhi Phifer star.
According to Entertainment Weekly, original Roots star LeVar Burton will make a cameo in the new series:
When I arrived, the very first scene that I saw was the naming sequence when Omoro holds the baby Kunta up to the sky and says, ‘Behold, the only thing greater than you. This has been an extraordinary experience.”
Roots premieres on History on May 30th at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The series will air over four consecutive nights.
