Sam and Friends: Park Pays Tribute to First Jim Henson Muppet Show

Sam and Friends TV show

Muppets are taking over the park. A new tribute to Jim Henson has been installed at Magruder Park in the puppeteer’s hometown of Hyattsville, MD, Hyattsville Today reports.

The memorial features benches in the shapes of muppets and a planter featuring images from Henson’s early TV show, Sam and Friends. The segment, which ran on WRC-TV from 1955 to 1961, featured the first appearance of Kermit the Frog.

From Hyattsville Mayor Candace Hollingsworth:

The City of Hyattsville is thrilled to honor the life and work of Jim Henson with this beautiful art installation. The planter showcases characters that Henson created at the University of Maryland, not long after he graduated from Northwestern High School, and for a show which aired in the Washington, DC, area. The quotes on the benches aim to inspire our youth that they, too, can each make the world a bit better.”
