Scandal will air a new episode later tonight on ABC, and the series is one of the many ABC renewed earlier this month. That does not mean that the end of the series is not in sight.
Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington, and several other members of the cast spoke about the series at a Paley Center event earlier this week, and Rhimes once again made it clear that she has an idea on how the series will end. However, she does not yet know when she will let the fans know when the show is ending. In past interviews, she admitted that the series would not have the same longevity as Grey’s Anatomy, which was renewed for a 13th season by ABC.
Both Washington and Rhimes spoke about Olivia’s journey on the series. Fans were shocked this season when Olivia left Fitz. The couple was reunited for a tense conversation on last week’s episode. The series has received some criticism from fans for its direction this season, including a controversial abortion storyline during the first half of the season.
In the past, Olivia and Fitz being the end-game of the series has been teased, but that might not happen. According to TV Insider, Kerry Washington said the following about what she wants for Olivia when the series ends:
“To be honest with you, I don’t feel I have that control over her. I feel almost like my job is to live with her and hold a space with her—a very non-judgmental space for her—and allow her to be who she is. I want her to fully be on her journey, and at some point I want her to be at home and happy and peaceful. I don’t have an attachment to what that looks like. I don’t have an attachment to a particular person or place or situation. She has a lot of work to do on herself. Whatever it looks like, if it brings her joy and peace, I’m in.”
