In a recent interview, the talented actor and film director spoke about his plans for the future. As part of that, he was asked about the future of Scrubs. Zach was quoted as saying “I think this is the last year. Touchstone and NBC still hate each other and that doesn’t bode well for a show that they both do.”
For those that don’t know, television networks produce shows through their own production companies as well as license them from other companies and studios. Touchstone is part of the Disney company which also owns NBC’s rival network ABC. By producing a successful show like Scrubs for NBC, Touchstone is actually hurting its own sister company ABC.
In another article, Zach looked at ending the show from a more personal perspective, taking into account series creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence’s plans. “I think everyone, you know, Bill’s going to move on and I think I’m going to move on. I think we want to go out on top and not drag it into the ground. I’ll miss it. It’s my family. Bill gave me my big break but I’m going to obviously continue a working relationship with Bill because we’re a great time. We really work well together. So I want to keep doing many things with him. I will miss Scrubs. It’s a lot of fun and it’s been such a fun group of people to work with. But I think you’ve got to start a new chapter after six years. I don’t want to be ‘Screech.’ Especially now. I don’t want to be selling T-shirts to save my house. ”
So will that cause the end of Scrubs? Hard to say. If the show remains popular and financially feasible, the show could potentially continue on NBC or even move to another network, presumably ABC. But would rising film director Zach Braff and creator Bill Lawrence be a part of it? That sounds doubtful and watching Scrubs without them would be a tough pill to swallow.
