The Sex and the City TV show ran on HBO for 94 episodes, from 1998 to 2004. The storyline follows the lives and loves of four women from the Big Apple; writer Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), man-hungry Samantha (Kim Cattrall), conservative Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and workaholic Miranda (Cynthia Nixon).
Almost immediately after the series wrapped, rumors began circulating that a feature film was in the works. Sex and the City: The Movie finally happened and was released in U.S. theaters on May 30th. The film ties up Carrie’s long-running relationship with Big (Chris Noth) and ends with the ladies toasting Samantha’s birthday and the future.
While the movie was being made, it was uncertain if that future would include the ladies ever reuniting on screen again. After all, most big-screen adaptations of TV shows have bombed at the box office. Once the film opened in theaters, that uncertainty quickly melted away. The movie grossed $57 million in its opening weekend and, to date, has brought in over $400 million worldwide.

Recently appearing on the UK’s The Paul O’Grady Show, Cattrall confirmed that there will be a sequel. She said, “We will do the sequel next summer.”
Warner Bros. has confirmed that the studio is currently in negotiations over the picture. It was reported that, when the foursome signed on for the first film, they were contractually obligated for a second. While the specifics of the agreements are unknown, a key part of the negotiations is likely to be over scheduling. As Catrall admits, “[it’s] difficult getting everybody who’s so incredibly busy all together at the same time.”
Michael Patrick King, the writer and director of the first Sex movie, is certainly ready to partner with the ladies once again. He recently told EW, “It doesn’t feel done to me at all. It feels like it generated a whole new burst of enthusiasm for these characters.” Stay tuned!
