Sex and the City: HBO Eyes a Reunion Movie

When last we saw writer Carrie Bradshaw, she was in Paris with her boyfriend Mr. Big. He had admitted that he loved her and it looked like the two would live happily ever after. Or would they? After all, things rarely go smoothly for the Sex and the City ladies. Now, it looks like we might get a glimpse of their future.

Sex and the City was a popular series that debuted on June 6, 1998 on HBO. The show followed the exploits of four female best friends in their thirties and forties and starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall. Set in New York City, the show was based on a novel of the same name by Candace Bushnell and often focused on socially relevant issues. The series ran for 94 episodes and, though fans were sad to see it go, the last episode was broadcast on February 22, 2004. It was called “An American Girl in Paris, Part Deux” and was the most-watched episode of the series with 10.6 million viewers.

At the time of the series’ end, there were some talks of a feature film that would continue the stories of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha. Reportedly these plans fell through when Kim Cattrall (Samantha) left the project. The official word was that there were schedule issues but multiple reports have claimed she dropped out because she wasn’t given script approval or a salary equal to Sarah Jessica Parker’s.

Well now, over two years later, it looks like the plans for a Sex and the City movie are back on. HBO has reportedly restarted negotiations with the four female stars. The film would continue the story of the Manhattan foursome and be written and directed by series executive producer Michael Patrick King.

It’s too soon to discuss any story details or dates as yet — especially with the difficult task of coordinating the actors’ schedules still ahead. But still, HBO is excited about the prospect. One representative was quoted as saying, “We always thought a Sex and the City movie was a great idea. We would love it if it happened.” Fans of the “female fab four” would certainly agree.
