Earlier, John Cho revealed his character Sulu is gay in the upcoming movie Star Trek Beyond. Now, a glimpse of Sulu’s partner and daughter can be seen in a new Korean trailer for the film, 1701 News reports.
Since news of Sulu’s sexuality broke, a bit of controversy has arisen. George Takei, who played Sulu in the original Star Trek series, disagreed with the new character development, saying the decision was “really unfortunate.” Star Trek Beyond stars Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto both responded to Takei’s criticism, defending the decision to make Sulu gay as something positive for the LGBT community.
Star Trek Beyond comes out in theaters July 22nd.
