Why did Bryan Fuller leave Star Trek: Discovery? Recently, the former showrunner spoke to Newsweek about his departure from the upcoming CBS All Access TV series.
In October, Fuller announced he was stepping down as showrunner from the sci-fi reboot because of his commitment to Starz’s upcoming series American Gods. However, Fuller remains credited as an executive producer on Star Trek: Discovery.
Speaking to Newsweek, Fuller said his plate was too full to do both Star Trek and American Gods:
Ultimately, with my responsibilities [elsewhere], I could not do what CBS needed to have done in the time they needed it done for Star Trek. It felt like it was best for me to focus on landing the plane with American Gods and making sure that was delivered in as elegant and sophisticated a fashion as I could possibly do.”
He later revealed the exit from Star Trek: Discovery, which he wrote the first two episodes for, was bittersweet:
“It is bittersweet. But it was just a situation that couldn’t be resolved otherwise…so I had to step away.”
Fuller did say though that he still wants to be involved in any way he can:
I’m not involved in production, or postproduction, so I can only give them the material I’ve given them and hope that it is helpful for them. I’m curious to see what they do with it. They have my number and if they need me I will absolutely be there for them.”
Star Trek: Discovery is slated to debut in May 2017.
